Bitcoin is becoming a state-level asset worldwide — while India remains on the sidelines

The U.S. launched its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in January 2025, marking a major shift in the government’s stance toward cryptocurrency. A presidential order in March officially established a policy of accumulating national bitcoin reserves, turning the digital currency from a speculative tool into a strategic asset.

El Salvador holds over 6,000 BTC in its national reserves, while Bhutan has accumulated more than 12,000 BTC through eco-friendly hydropower mining — amounting to nearly 40% of the country’s GDP. Even China, despite its ban on crypto trading, remains the second-largest state holder of bitcoin with 194,000 BTC, seized from financial schemes like PlusToken.

As global powers explore bitcoin reserves, India finds itself in a unique position. The country is aiming for a $5 trillion economy by 2025–2026, boasts 87% fintech adoption (compared to 67% globally), and has over 650 million smartphone users.
